A justice of the peace has the following responsibilities:

  • Preside over criminal misdemeanor cases committed in Flathead County, including fish and game violations, traffic citations issued by the Montana Highway Patrol and the Flathead County Sheriff’s Department.
  • Setting bond for misdemeanors, including DUIs and partner/family member assaults.
  • Small Claims Court.
  • Civil cases with a demand for recovery up to $7,000.
  • Issuing Temporary Orders of Protection and Orders of Protection.
  • Initial appearances and preliminary hearings for defendants charged with a felony.
  • Review and issue search warrants for law enforcement.

  • May 11 – Beginning of late registration period for Primary Election
  • June 8 – Primary Election
  • October 4 – 5:00 p.m. deadline for regular voter registration for General Election
  • October 5 – Beginning of late registration period for General Election
  • November 2 – Federal General Election
